Leopard geckos : yeah, let's face it, they're just the coolest reptile pets on the planet

It's not difficult to see why leopard geckos are fast becoming a popular choice amongst all the reptile pets. Who knows, they might even trade places with dogs, cats and fish in the popular pet stakes.

They are cute (some people would disagree, I did too when I first saw one, but they really grow on you), they have those memorizing eyes (having eyelids is one of the not-so-common feature of these wonderful gecko pets), and, with years of breeding, come in a stunning array of colors and types.

Leopard geckos are generally amiable creatures. Although they're not the type of pet you walk around with, or do the dishes with as they balance on your shoulder, they do appreciate some gentle handling and interactive.

In fact, some leopard geckos are known to be very affectionate and almost playful with their owners.

Another reason for their popularity is because leopard geckos are really easy to maintain and please. They are not the type of reptile pets that require much attention, maintenance and medical care as long as you know the basics of good leopard gecko care. It's all about creating the right, healthy environment for them.

With some basic set ups and tips, not only will your leopard gecko live a happy and healthy life but I truly believe they will have a positive effect on your happiness and well being too!

The leopard gecko originates from semi-arid to arid deserts so you should try to create a leopard gecko habitat for them that replicates this original environment. A 10 gallon terrarium (like an aquarium, they just call it a terrarium because it's for lizards, reptiles and such) is big enough for one leopard gecko, obviously the bigger the better if you can spare the space.

Your precious leopard gecko pet needs fresh, clean water every single day.

And of course, one of the most important factors in proper leopard gecko care is its food.

Leopard geckos are insectivores so they eat mostly insects. The main diet are crickets. These are easy to breed, or you can buy them by the box full from any good reptile pet shop. Mealworms, which are a type of beetle larvae are great too, though high in fat content so you don't want mealworms to be the main food. Earthworms are also a tasty treat, and if your leopard gecko is pretty large and one of those big eaters, then a juicy baby mice goes down great! You can buy them frozen from reptile pet stores or even order from the internet at a good leopard gecko supplier.

Leopard geckos don't need to eat every day. Every gecko pet is different but if they are not greedily chowing down on the food you give them, then you're probably over feeding.

Follow the main leopard gecko guidelines and put love and attention into leopard gecko care and you'll have happy healthy pet who will have a happy healthy owner!
